Reporters from all three stations working the night shift were assigned to the Olson murder. They were all lined up in front of a police satellite station. This would be the station closest to the murder scene. The thinking was no one wanted to set up and go live in front of a cow pasture or light up a quiet neighborhood at eleven p.m. The station gave everyone a chance to put up the strong lights for loud-talking reporters.

Reporters for the two other stations were twenty feet apart. They were expecting to see Jim Mason, the Channel 27 night reporter, who was with them all evening. All of them were rehashing video and interviews taken from the dayside. They had nothing new to report.

Then, Booker Johnson took Mason’s place and stood next to the other reporters. They stared at Booker with worried faces. He heard a photographer say, “What’s he doing here?”

One reporter pulled a cell phone to presumably call the station to find out if the police released anything new. Why was Booker Johnson at the station? Just being there caused a lot of angst.

Just after eleven p.m., Booker looked at a TV monitor and watched the start of the newscast. He heard the anchors do a brief rundown of what happened. Next to him, Booker heard the other two reporters talking about the same facts they were given much earlier in the day.

Then, in his earpiece, Booker heard, “Channel 27 reporter Booker Johnson has the exclusive details . . .”

“A worried partner of Ben Olson returned from a trip and found out the terrible news that her boyfriend of the past few years was a murder victim. She, like the rest of us, is trying to figure out why anyone would want to take his life.”

Booker watched in the monitor and saw the interview he completed in the past hour. He also used a photograph she gave him, showing a smiling Ben Olson. The package ran about ninety seconds. Then, Booker was live again. “She is pleading for any help from the public. If you saw anything, heard anything, please call the tip line. Booker Johnson, Channel 27 news.”

Booker heard the all-clear in his earpiece. He was done for the night. Finally. Near him, he saw reporters on cell phones trying to explain to someone how Booker got the interview. Even if they went to the murder scene now, Greta was gone. The station okayed all the overtime for Dominguez. They went back to the station and put away the van and the gear.
